FIRST FLUSH OF SUCCESS: Nelson city councillors Gail Collingwood and Pete Rainey officially opened the 1903 Square toilet block.

TALKING POINT: The land at 1903 Square was provided by the Henry Chenowyth Cock Trust.

Toilet humour was inevitable with the official opening of the Nelson City Council's newest loo - and it's expected to quickly become a global talking point.

The new block, on 1903 Square near the top of Trafalgar St, is on a site gifted by the Cock Charitable Trust - a point which city councillor Gail Collingwood could not avoid when opening the block yesterday.

"So we need to acknowledge the Cock estate, which was founded by Henry Chenowyth Cock," she declared during her speech, perhaps stifling a chuckle.

"Now, I think the sign on the side of the building is really going to become quite an icon for the city, and probably will feature on many Facebook or social media sites throughout the world.

"So I think in a roundabout way that we'll get lots of publicity about this." Official duties completed, she checked the facility and told the Nelson Mail: "It's a fantastic toilet.

"I was most impressed - crikey dick," she said without skipping a beat.

"People will see this and roar with laughter," she said of the plaque on the wall acknowledging the Cock toilet block.

She said she had hoped her 18 years on the council might have ended on a high note with the opening of a performing arts centre. Instead, it was marked with her first, and last, official opening of a toilet block.

"There are big facilities opened, and small facilities opened. For some reason the small ones fall on me," the diminutive city councillor said.

Mrs Collingwood said councils had to deliver many things for the greater good, and there was no doubt that a public toilet did just that. The new toilet block was built for $125,000 and replaces the old Church Hill toilets.

It was built with heritage features in mind, to complement the style of Trafalgar St and 1903 square. It was designed by local architects Jerram Tocker Barron and built by Nelmac.

It is described as a fully modern facility with all the conveniences such as air blade hand dryers and a wheelchair-friendly stall.
