Christmas Eve with Students and some Parents

First time I have ever eaten out at a restaurant on Christmas Day - That I can remember anyway.

We usually have quite a gathering for Christmas Dinner but decided on a quieter one this year. A new restaurant had opened just around the corner so we decided to try it. 

Well the decor was beatiful, complete with an English phone box and a huge collection of car number plates from around the world and any drink one could want - just a beer for me will do, thanks.

Waitress spoke English and the menu was in English and Chinese and included T-bone and Rib, no roast lamb but plenty of selction and good service.

Had barely had a look around and was approached by a lady from a neighbouring table who I happened to know as a mother whose daughter had been a student of mine. She wanted me to help with here English lessons so Mei, the boss talked detail and money and so a bit more income.

Enjoyed our meal and asked for the bill but was told it had already been paid by the ladies husband which was very thoughtful of him.

It was appreciated greatly and thanked them all very much, a lovely evening out.

Left the restaurant and braved the chilly outdoors, had dropped to -26c but it was only a short walk home and into our very warm hacienda.

Dear John & Mei,

I have just received your latest post regarding causes of death in NZ, it seems like the publicity and sensationalism of a shark death is in inverse proportion to the real statistics. I understand that a shark has been seen near Tahuna Beach and is causing a real panic. I think there are only 4 shark deaths be year here in Australia but they are always headline news, likewise I understand that deaths by snakebite here are exceptionally rare also.

John thank you again for all of your interesting posts in the past year, they are really appreciated. I have learnt a lot about your family, Mei's family, your days in the NZ Navy and ongoing Naval life not to mention my increased understanding of life in modern China. Ancient or modern it is certainly a most fascinating place with so much to see. I found your Currin family history posts very interesting. As for your comments on the weather, did you say feels like minus 28 deg, hmmm, it is plus 28 here today in Sydney and 38 degrees in the western suburbs and Melbourne is having 40 deg with a total fire ban! We see a lot of news items  from North Asia on the TV news, mainly  Korea, everyone is just so wrapped up.

Quickly looking back at 2012 it has been a very difficult year here for us, mainly due to Ruth's ongoing medical problems, it is a challenging and full time job for me doing home nursing duties. I try to make the best of  what is an unfortunate situation. Our big event of course was the birth of our first great grandchild, he is doing fine and he is now almost 4 months old.

We have no special plans for Christmas, I have put up the decorations, bought some nice things for Ruth and a few goodies and that is about all for this year. I would like to go down the coast or even visit the children but at present Ruth is just not well enough to travel unless absolutely. I will keep this short as I need to go and attend to Ruth's needs, medications etc. I just want to say a happy Christmas to to you both and a have wonderful New Year (Western & Chinese)

Just got in from the mad house. Christmas is not a holiday here (except for me) but everybody treats it as a special time. Finished classes and met up with Mei to do some shopping at the supermarket. Thought I was in Auckland except the people looked different but very busy with great queues at the checkouts. There was a bit of a fuss when Callum Robertson started at Brightwater School on his fifth birthday.

Callum became Brightwater's 300th pupil, the first time in the school's 124-year history that it has reached that milestone. It exceeded 100 pupils for the first time in the 1940s, cracked 200 in 1978 before climbing out of a slump of 174 pupils in 1991 to reach the 300 mark on Thursday.

However, principal Gerald Baldwin said the record tally would only stand for another week as 43 year 6 students would leave for intermediate at the end of term.

"For us it's like, this may be the only time," Mr Baldwin said.

He attributed the rising roll to the popularity of Brightwater township, saying the semi-rural suburb was a growth area.

"We've had new subdivisions coming up for about a decade now, it's all about the lifestyle," he said.

Mr Baldwin said Brightwater was far enough out of Nelson to let people have small farms but because it was only five minutes from Richmond, people had everything they needed.

Callum's mother Annemarie Koevoet said her eldest son had enjoyed the school visits leading up to this week and had been looking forward to starting.

"He really likes the reading programme although he was a bit nervous about starting today - I was a bit nervous for him too," she said.

"It's alway a bit harder for the eldest child. When the others start they would have seen it all before."

Ms Koevoet said Callum had narrowly missed out on being statistically significant when he was born, being the 1001th baby delivered at Nelson Hospital in 2007. She said Callum was just pipped at the post when a late arrival was rushed into the hospital and became No 1000.
