It was a joke to frighten Mum

Grand canyon pic

GOING, GOING...: The photo Samantha Busch sent to her mother.

An American woman who sent a joke photo of her near-death experience at the Grand Canyon to scare her mother has become a viral hit.

Samantha Busch got her boyfriend to snap a picture of her apparently about to slip from the edge of a cliff in the canyon.

She then posted the photo to Reddit, with the caption: "Mom was worried about my trip to the Grand Canyon, I sent her this picture."

But she was in fact standing safely on a ledge out of shot. Busch says she was trying to teach her over-protective mother a lesson.

"For five days up to when we left, my mom had warned me about falling off the cliff or being blown off," she told ABC News.

"So when while I was there, I found a cool little spot that I could sneak into, and lean back and look like I am falling off, and I thought that would be a great picture to send back home to my parents."

Dined out last night with a few foreigners, there are not many here, maybe 20 or so

Mushtaq a Yorkshire/Iraqi and Vic a Polish/Canadian and John a South Island/New Zealander
Went to Juliets for a fillet steak which was actually delicious and a few whiskeys as well
Derek, from Scotland and a new arrival who has decided to retire here with his Chinese wife and that is George from

Newcastle, UK and more recently Canada as well.

And now a little more jovial after a few drams of Chivas Regal

George has been delayed

Mei has been busy getting a special meal ready for Georges arrival making Chinese dumplings.

Stirring up the mince and chopping up the vegetables

George arrived in Shanghai at 7.00am this morning and was met by one of his friends. He then made his way to check into the onward flight to Shenyang and the New Zealand agent had not completed the booking so he has been delayed until a later flight. We have not been able to contatt the NZ agaent as it is Saturday night and party time I guess.

Anyway we booked another onward ticket so he will be a couple of hours late now.

George is on his way back to China

Mei's son George is coming back to see his Dad who is in hospital wit cancer of the liver so it is a happy and sad time. Mei is over the moon about seeing her son and then his father may not have a lot of time left.

He has passed all exams and will graduate in next year so congratulations on that, he has been under a lot of stress studying for exams and concern for his father.

He will be here later tomorrow afternoon for about 10 days so it will be nice to see him.

Mei and I are on our way out now for a steak so that will be nice except it is heading for a -8c tonight.

Shopping in Shenyang

We go shopping in Shenyang a couple of times a year to pick up a few extras for Christmas and sometimes for other little treats. Shenyang is the capital of our province and is a larger city with about 9 million people and is nearly 100 Km north of us.
We went to the Train station but none running for a couple of hours so decided on the bus. The train is really cheap at about one NZ dollar, the bus is about six NZ dollars. On our way to the bus station across the road we were intercepted by a taxi driver touting for passengers for Shenyang in a shared ride. Cost by taxi was seven dollars fifty so off we went in the taxi.
Picked the wrong day to buy a turkey for Christmas as today is Thanksgiving Day and none left but got everything else we wanted.
Another taxi home and the weather had turned a bit messy and it snowed all the way back but home with our goodies and of course none from New Zealand, just Aussie stuff and also from The US and Europe.
Cannot understand why NZ is not selling more here, maybe everybody is very happy with the way things are back home.

We were going to Shenyang by train but it was not leaving for a couple of hours so off for a taxi

A friendly spider found in New Zealand

A friendly spider found in New Zealand

Please Dont hurt me! I am your friend!! I am the Huntsman spider.
This species is also called the Avondale or housekeeping spider and they are common throughout the tropics/subtropics. They frequently live in houses (squeezing into cracks and behind furniture) and they could be said to be beneficial because they eat things like cockroaches and flies. They don’t spin webs but catch their prey by stealth and speed.
Due to its large size, it might look dangerous but this particular spider is not venomous (to humans) although the fangs (chelicerae) look like they could give a nasty bite! I was careful when I picked it up. By the way, the photo of the spider on its back does not show it dead, it just played dead when I put it on its back. Convenient for photographs!
