The Naval Service Vessel of the Defence Forces of Ireland L.É. NIAMH has detained a French registered fishing vessel approximately 30 nautical miles South West of Valentia on April 3. The detention was in relation to alleged under recording of catch. The vessel was escorted by the L.É. NIAMH to Castletownbere, wherefrom it was handed over to the Gardaí. The Naval Service have boarded 225 vessels and issued 8 warnings so far in 2013. This is the second detention of the year. L.É. NIAMH (the second of the Róisín class) was built in Appledore Shipyard in the UK for the Naval Service. She is built to the successful Róisín design that optimises her patrol performance in Irish waters (which are among the roughest in the world), year round.
